Olkiluoto Nuclear Plant tolerates sea level rise.4/6/11 Talouselämä Journal, 14.3.2011 (Mr.Ismo Virta) Translation: According to Information Officer Juhani Ikonen, the Finnish Olkiluoto Nuclear Plants have multiple redundant power feed for cooling water emergency pumping systems. 'Underneath the reactor there is also a 2.800m3 cooling water storage, where the gases can be blown. This would prevent pressure rise in the building. Unlike Fukushima, Olkiluoto has a Nitrogen system to completely prevent Hydrogen explosion in case of fuel rod overheating with subsequent hydrogen buildup. All the Olkiluoto plant buildings are at the same height from sea level. In case the sea level rise would be 3.5m, water would enter the plant area. There is no historical data that the sea level has ever risen to that height. |
